Polarization control in spun and telecommunication optical fibers.
We consider the counterpropagating interaction of a signal and a pump beam in a spun fiber and in a randomly birefringent fiber, the latter being relevant to optical telecommunication systems. On the basis of a geometrical analysis of the Hamiltonian singularities of the system, we provide a complete understanding of the phenomenon of polarization attraction in these two systems, which allows t...
متن کاملPolarization decorrelation in optical fibers with randomly varying elliptical birefringence.
Polarization decorrelation in single-mode fibers with randomly varying elliptical birefringence is studied. It is found that the effects of ellipticity on the polarization decorrelation length depend on the relative sizes of the beat length and the autocorrelation length of the birefringence fluctuations in the fiber. However, the evolution of the differential group delay remains unaffected by ...
متن کاملFabrication and study of microstructured optical fibers with elliptical holes.
We report the fabrication of what are believed to be the first microstructured optical fibers with uniformly oriented elliptical holes. A high degree of hole ellipticity is achieved with a simple technique that relies on hole deformation during fiber draw. Both form and stress-optic birefringence are characterized over a broad wavelength range. These measurements are in excellent agreement with...
متن کاملStable coupled conjugate solitary waves in optical fibers.
Four-wave mixing of an intense continuous-wave pump beam with an ultrashort soliton signal in an optical fiber is theoretically analyzed. A novel class of stable two-color coupled solitary waves is found. These vector parametric solitons represent the optimal frequency conversion of an ultrashort pulse.
متن کاملInteraction of solitons in tunnel-coupled optical fibers.
A pair of weakly interacting optical fibers, which are described by two nonlinear Schrödinger equations with linear coupling terms, is considered in the framework of perturbation theory. It is shown that the interaction of optical solitons in this system is inelastic and that they may form a bound state (bisoliton). The stability and internal oscillations of the bisoliton are also investigated.
